Sanford Esry

Veteran Trauma Therapist

I am a veteran with experience in both active duty military service and the National Guard. After transitioning from military to civilian life, I developed a deep passion for psychology and found fulfillment in supporting fellow veterans as they adjust to civilian life and its unique challenges. I earned my first master's degree in Applied Psychology from Southern Oregon University, followed by a second master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwest Christian University, graduating in 2016.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with an emphasis on helping clients identify and change unhelpful thought patterns. I also integrate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to enhance emotional regulation, develop distress tolerance, and improve interpersonal effectiveness, providing clients with practical tools to navigate difficult emotions and relationships. I am dedicated to helping veterans transition back into civilian life and navigate the challenges that come with post-military service. I work with clients who have left the military and are struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and the challenges of transitioning into civilian life. This includes those facing difficulties with retirement, adjusting to new roles, and coping with the emotional and psychological hurdles that often arise during this period.

Outside of GHCS, I stay active by working out and focusing on my health. I enjoy hiking, traveling, and reconnecting with old military friends while exploring the U.S. and camping in National Parks. In my free time, you’ll find me reading, working out, or playing video games online with my children. I am the ideal therapist for you if you are dedicated to fostering meaningful change through regular therapy sessions and are willing to embrace the skills you learn, even when faced with challenges.
