Mental Health Medication Management

At Greater Houston Counseling Services, we are pleased to offer Medication Evaluations and ongoing Medication Management services. This important service further enhances our commitment to providing comprehensive mental health care and quick, efficient medication management as we support our clients on their wellness journey.
We understand that mental health requires a multifaceted approach. Therapy alone can be transformative, but for some individuals, medication can serve as a valuable tool to supplement the therapeutic work. By taking our medication management services to the next level, we aim to provide an integrated solution for those seeking a holistic approach to mental health treatment.

How Does Medication Management Work?
At GHCS, our services are led by a highly trained Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). The Nurse Practitioner works closely with each client to assess symptoms, explore treatment options, and prescribe and monitor medications as part of a personalized care plan.
To ensure the highest standard of care, our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is under the clinical supervision of an off-site, board-certified psychiatrist. This collaborative model allows for both flexibility and comprehensive oversight, combining the PMHNP’s accessibility and client-centered approach with the psychiatrist’s expertise for complex cases or treatment adjustments. Together, they help ensure your medication needs are met safely, ethically, and effectively as part of your broader therapeutic journey.

Mental Health Medication Management
Whether you are currently on mental health medication or looking to start medication, beginning Medication Management at GHCS starts with a comprehensive evaluation by our in-house staff. Based on this information, our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan that aligns with your needs and goals.
Once medication is prescribed, you will have regular follow-up appointments with our in-house Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to monitor its effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments. You can expect frequent scheduled follow-up visits at the beginning of your treatment plan to monitor side effects. These appointments ensure that your medication works optimally and that you feel supported throughout the process.
It has always been our mission to take the burden of mental health treatment off your shoulders so that you can focus on your healing journey.
Medication Management FAQs

Can I get medication management without receiving counseling at GHCS?
Yes! You can be a Medication Management patient without using our counseling services.
Is this covered by my insurance?
Sometimes your therapist is In-network, but the Medical Director is Out-of-Network or vice-versa. Our staff can help you make sense of your coverage but it is always a good idea to check.
What is the continuity of care like?
Our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner collaborates with an off-site, board-certified psychiatrist to provide well-rounded, high-quality care. This team-based approach balances personalized, accessible medication management with expert guidance for more complex needs, ensuring your treatment remains safe, ethical, and aligned with your overall mental health goals.
How often will I need to be scheduled for follow-up appointments?
The frequency and amount of follow-up sessions will be determined by your medical team based on your specific treatment plan.

What if I’m denied medication?
Based on the results of your evaluation, it is possible that your request can be denied. This is fairly common and is determined by a myriad of factors by our Medical Director.
You are welcome to discuss the specifics with our team.
What can I expect during my evaluation with the Medical Director?
Our in-house Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will review your medical and mental health history, current symptoms, and any previous medication experiences with the psychiatrist. Based on this information, they will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan that aligns with your needs and goals.
What happens if I’m nervous about taking medication?
That's completely normal, and we will help you overcome those fears. First, our team will answer any questions you have about your treatment plan. In the first few months of treatment, you will receive frequent follow-ups to discuss side effects and your progression.
